Welcome

Introduction

Hello and welcome to Mushroom Health, a centre for the study, isolation and application of the natural health-boosting compounds found in certain "medicinal mushrooms".
Historically, mainstream medicine has almost entirely overlooked the study of fungi and the beneficial medicinal properties found in various sub species of the genus. This health-boosting potential has long been understood in Asia, where medicinal mushrooms are utilised extensively in food and are widely available as supplements. However, due largely to media exposure, various mycologists have drawn western attention to a previously obscure and misunderstood form of potent natural medicine.
The most obvious example, Paul Stamets has helped change the general perception of mushrooms and highlight their health benefits. His products have been widely accepted and endorsed, helping to also change the narrative regarding the medicinal potential of certain fungi.
In many societies, starting in childhood, through stories, books, cartoons and other media we are warned not only about the high toxicity of wild mushrooms but that they are associated with witchcraft and other nefarious activities!
Thus we mature with a natural fear and aversion for these wonderful entities, stifling what should (in my opinion) be a much closer relationship between humans and fungi.

The Journey

I have grown mushrooms since about eight years ago. I became interested in Hericium Erinaceus or Lion's Mane after my mother suffered a stroke in 2022. At this point I was horrified to learn that modern medicine focuses on preventative measures to ward off reoccurrence but offers next to nothing in terms of neural recuperation or regeneration.
I remembered hearing about the possible positive effects of Lion's Mane on the brain and so began a three year journey studying this particular sub species.
When, after much research, I became sure of the neural potential that Lion's Mane possesses I started giving my mother a low, daily dose of dried, powdered Lion's Mane fruiting body, which I grew and made into capsules. Although there were undoubted slight improvements to her confusion, focus and short term memory, this achieved little of what I had hoped.
After consulting a friend who works in another biological field I became aware of extraction — using alcohol and water as solvents, the medicinal compounds present within the mushroom cells are 'freed', making them far more bio-available.
After one and a half years taking this tincture incrementally twice daily, she is able to lead a relatively normal life for a lady of 82!

About Us

Our Mission

At Mushroomhealth, our focus is centred on growing high-quality 100% organic mushroom fruiting bodies, from which we extract certain compounds that have been proven to hold a myriad of health benefits.

Our Model

We follow a strict code of only using 100% organic materials. Starting from spores germinated on agar plates, mushroom mycelium is then expanded on sterilised wheat grain.
Once fully colonised we fruit our mushrooms on pasteurised hardwood pellets, enriched with organic nutrients and select minerals. The mushroom fruiting bags are grown in a high humidity, temperature controlled environment, where they receive low level full spectrum light which mimics their natural growing conditions.

Our Products

Medicinal Mushrooms including Lion's Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, and Cordyceps Militaris contain vitamins, minerals and proteins that nourish our health. Active compounds namely Triterpenes, Polysaccharides (beta-glucans), Terpenoids, Sterols, Lectins, Phenolic compounds and Flavonoids extracted from these mushrooms have a direct, positive effect on our bodies.
These compounds help support and boost the immune system, lower cholesterol, support cardiovascular health and enhance natural energy levels, along with many other health benefits.

Hericium Erinaceus

Lion's Mane

Lion's Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) has long been known for its medicinal qualities, especially relating to neuroplasticity. It boosts general neural function, including cognition, memory, mood, clarity and concentration — but more importantly it can help prevent and combat neurodegenerative disease.
One of the primary causes of neural degeneration is the breakdown of Myelin, a protective coating enveloping the nerve fibres of neurons, responsible for sending messages across the brain (see diagram below).

Lion's Mane helps support and repair this protective Myelin coating around nerves, thus eliminating what is widely viewed as one of the main contributing factors of various neural diseases. By encouraging this repair process, it combats demyelination — a key driver behind various neurodegenerative diseases.
This amazing mushroom supports "neurogenesis" — the growth of new brain cells — by stimulating the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). These vital proteins support the health, longevity and "synaptogenesis" (growth of new synapses) found in the central and peripheral nervous systems (see diagram above)

The mushroom's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties shield synapses from degradation, thereby helping to prevent age-related cognitive decline.
Research into Hericium erinaceus is ongoing but the above statements are supported by extensive preclinical models and emerging human trials.

Our Tinctures

Tinctures vs Powders

By a process of extraction, mushroom tinctures deliver only the isolated, beneficial compounds that support human health — which many powders do not.
Mushroom cells are protected by a durable, fibrous layer called Chitin. Chitin is so durable that our stomachs have a problem breaking it down. Beneficial compounds found within this protective layer are therefore not absorbed properly by the body and pass through us.
Powders and capsules elaborated using raw fruiting body, without extraction, have a far reduced effect on the human body. Our process of liquid extraction removes this protective layer and filters out all but the most beneficial compounds.
The end result is a potent liquid medicine that our bodies can easily ingest, that has a perceptible and highly positive effect.

I have decided on this method having seen first hand its positive effects compared to powders I have made and some widely available products I have purchased. I believe that knowledge, love and respect are the only ways to produce an effective organic medicine.

Extraction Method

Mushroomhealth Lion's Mane dual-extraction tincture bottle
Our potent tincture is handmade in small batches using colonised mycelium and fruiting bodies of Lion's Mane mushroom grown in Spain. This tincture combines an alcohol infusion with a water decoction to release the medicinal compounds.
  • Alcohol extracts Erinacines A–S (from mycelium), Hericenones, Hericerins, Terpenoids and Sterols from the fruiting body.
  • Heated water extracts beneficial polysaccharides, beta-glucans and water soluble phenolics.
*It is true that whilst many beneficial compounds are harvested from the mushroom fruit, certain potent concentrations of these compounds can also be found in their mycelium. For instance, mycelium of Lion's Mane is found to have higher concentrations of Erinacines than in the mushroom body itself.
When compared to swallowing a capsule, our 5% alcoholic liquid tincture (taken sublingually) enters the bloodstream up to five times faster, with a 98% absorption rate compared to only 50% when taken in powdered capsule form.

Use & Storage

How to Use

We recommend starting using the tincture in low doses. This allows time for the body to adapt to the active constituents held within the liquid. We advise incrementally increasing the dose over time to gain the full benefits.
We recommend (under normal circumstances) after 1 to 2 weeks, following a regime of taking 2–3 ml first thing in the morning (min 30 minutes before food). If needed this can be followed by 2–3 ml at around 3pm.
If taking after a meal, wait approximately 4 hours after eating to allow for digestion.
⚠️ It is not advised to take the tincture after 6pm.
We recommend taking the tincture sublingually (under the tongue) as this aids rapid ingestion into the bloodstream. However, swallowing is also fine — greater focus on timing is needed.
Whilst it is extremely difficult to overdose on our tinctures, diarrhoea is the most common result should this happen.
